The pleasant sun-filled days of summer pass

And usher in the dazzling autumn time,

A time of harvest when the earth is prime,

A time of beauty nothing can surpass.

The hills and valleys are a showy mass

Of vivid colors startling and sublime;

They blend, then clash, in nature's pantomime:

The reds and yellows, violet and brass.

This is a test of earth's transcendent schemes:

Where plowing, planting, tending all for naught?

Where springtime hopes and plans but empty dreams

Which in our summer labor forgot?

No, Autumn in her majesty redeems

And makes the earth a special, sacred spot.

Contentment consists not in great wealth

But in few wants.
